What Is a Dental Crown
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a natural tooth to restore its shape, size, strength and appearance. The crown encases the entire visible portion of the tooth above the gum line, distributing biting forces and protecting the underlying tooth structure from further damage. Crowns are one of the most common restorative dental procedures performed globally and are available at virtually every dental clinic in Dubai.
Crown Materials — Choosing the Right Option
Zirconia Crowns
Zirconia (zirconium dioxide) is currently the gold standard crown material in Dubai and internationally. It is exceptionally strong — significantly tougher than porcelain — making it suitable for both front and back teeth including molars subject to heavy biting forces. Full-contour zirconia crowns are milled from a solid block and have no metal substructure, eliminating the dark metal margin that can appear at the gum line as gums recede. High-translucency zirconia grades closely mimic the optical properties of natural enamel. Zirconia crowns in Dubai range from AED 1,500 to AED 3,500.
Porcelain Fused to Metal
PFM crowns have a metal substructure covered by a porcelain veneer layer. They are highly durable and have decades of clinical track record. The primary disadvantages are the potential for a grey-black metallic margin to appear at the gum line over time, and opacity that makes them slightly less aesthetic than all-ceramic options in the smile zone. PFM crowns remain a cost-effective and clinically sound choice for posterior teeth and patients with very heavy bites. Cost in Dubai is typically AED 800 to AED 1,800.
All-Ceramic and Lithium Disilicate (E.max)
IPS E.max, a lithium disilicate glass-ceramic, is the premium choice for anterior (front tooth) crowns where aesthetics are paramount. It has exceptional translucency and can be colour-matched with extreme precision. E.max is slightly less strong than zirconia but more than adequate for front teeth. E.max crowns are available at the majority of aesthetic-focused dental practices in Dubai.
When Is a Crown Needed
A dental crown is recommended in the following clinical situations:
- A tooth is severely decayed and insufficient natural tooth structure remains for a filling
- A tooth has fractured, cracked or broken, requiring full coverage protection
- After root canal treatment, when the tooth is structurally compromised and at high risk of fracture
- To cover and protect a tooth that has become severely worn from grinding (bruxism)
- To improve the appearance of a severely discoloured or misshapen tooth when veneers are not sufficient
- As the final restoration on a dental implant
- As the anchor element of a dental bridge
The Crown Process
Visit One — Preparation — The dentist administers local anaesthetic and reshapes the tooth to create space for the crown (typically 1 to 2 mm reduction on all surfaces). A temporary crown is placed to protect the prepared tooth. Digital or physical impressions are sent to the dental laboratory.
Visit Two — Fitting — The temporary crown is removed, and the permanent crown is assessed for fit, bite and shade. Once approved, it is cemented with permanent dental adhesive and the bite is refined. Same-day CEREC crowns are also available at some Dubai clinics equipped with in-house CAD/CAM milling machines, eliminating the laboratory wait.
Crown Longevity and Care
With proper care, dental crowns last 10 to 15 years on average — and many last considerably longer. The crown itself does not decay, but the margin where the crown meets the tooth at the gum line can be susceptible to secondary decay if oral hygiene is poor. Maintain crowns with twice-daily brushing, daily flossing, and professional hygiene visits every six months. Patients who grind their teeth should wear a custom nightguard to prevent ceramic fracture and protect the crown cement seal.
