Will I remember anything after IV sedation?
Most patients have no memory (amnesia) of dental treatment performed under IV conscious sedation — this is one of the key benefits. The benzodiazepine medications used (midazolam is most common) produce anterograde amnesia, meaning new memories are not formed during the sedated period. Patients are conscious and able to cooperate during treatment — they can open wider, turn their head, and respond to the dentist — but the brain does not record these events. For patients with dental phobia, this is transformative: treatment that seemed impossible becomes manageable and non-traumatic. Some patients report a very hazy recollection of parts of the appointment; this is normal and varies between individuals.
